37: Liza Minnelli, “Losing My Mind” (no.6, 1989)

Liza-with-a-Z’s sole UK hit came not during her 70s heyday, but nearly two decades later, with this Sondheim-penned torch song, as part of the Pet Shop Boys’ ongoing project to regenerate the careers of all their favourite divas. (First Dusty, then Liza - frankly, there’s no-one a Pet Shop beat couldn’t endow with a comeback: Carol Thatcher, Katie Boyle, Harriet Harman…) Chest-beating melodrama of the old school, putting all the 80s pop kids to shame: looking down from the gods, Liza’s late father would, surely, have loved it.
