79: Opus III, “It’s a Fine Day” (no.5, 1992)
Crusty dance classic that - rather like The Orb’s “Little Fluffy Clouds” - manages to be utterly serene and weirdly scary at the same time. (If my survey of one-hit wonders proved anything, it’s that I remain a sucker for an Italian piano house break.) What few of us knew at the time was that this was a cover version of sorts, reinterpreting a 1983 song of the same name from Peel-approved indie favourites Jane and Barton which somehow manages to be even spookier, not least because it may well be the only song ever to conclude with the line “We will have salad”. (Don’t watch the clip if you happen to be home alone.)
