93: Highly Likely, “Whatever Happened to You?” (no.35, 1973)
TV themes have provided a steady stream of one-hit wonders over the years: try as we might, who can forget Anita Dobson’s “Anyone Can Fall In Love” (no.4, 1986) or Lynne Hamilton’s Prisoner: Cell Block H scene-setter “On the Inside” (no.3, 1989)? This, however, remains the granddaddy of them all: the theme to one of the great British sitcoms, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, co-written by Ian La Frenais with Manfred Mann’s Mike Hugg. Verse-wise, a little "Let It Be"-lite, certainly, but the chorus rather perfectly preserves the melancholy tinge of the show’s comedy - and it’s guaranteed to bring back all kinds of memories to anyone old enough to remember it from the first time around.
