82: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” (no.4, 1982)

Everything a great rock song requires: diners, jukeboxes, boasts of barely legal conquests, and loud, raucous, repetitive chanting. I’m still not entirely certain if the casting of Kristen Stewart as Jett in the biopic The Runaways was inspired or flat-out nonsense - can you imagine Bella Swan ever generating the energy Jett works up here? - but one thing’s for sure: Britney probably didn’t love rock ‘n’ roll quite as much.
