96: Split Enz, “I Got You” (no.12, 1980)

Schizophrenic New Wavery from New Zealand’s Finn brothers, exactly what you might imagine Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer” as reinterpreted by the founder members of Crowded House to sound like. If you can get past the video’s very 80s stylings (obligatory 80s video props: billowing curtains, hairspray, and huge eyebrows that contrive to make all involved resemble ventriloquist’s dummies), there’s joy to be discovered in the way the clouds gathering over the brooding verses suddenly, unexpectedly lift to reveal a chorus that’s every bit the work of the blokes who wrote “Weather With You”.
