94: Pirates, “You Should Really Know” (no.8, 2004)
There have been more prominent one-hit “answer songs”, certainly: consider Lydia Murdock’s “Superstar” (no.14, 1983), a pointed retort to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”; or Frankee’s no.1 “F.U.R.B.”, part of the colossally tedious lovers’ tiff sparked by her ex Eamon’s “Fuck It (I Don’t Want You Back)” that clogged up the charts in 2004. Yet few of them were as cheeky - and as accomplished - as this response to the playa ignorance of the less-than-super Mario Winans track “I Don’t Wanna Know”. Vocals of a soulful vulnerability from the half-forgotten Shola Ama, atmosphere care of the Pirates themselves; the world would be a better place if more hatchbacks speeding into provincial city centres on a Friday night had this kind of thing blaring from their open windows.
